How to Correctly Remove Hair from a Bikini Line

The year was 1946, and Louis Réard had just unveiled his ‘Bikini’, a two piece swimsuit that shocked the world – not because of how little it concealed, but because it exposed the wearer’s navel! The bikini was named after the South Pacific atoll where the US was conducting testing of atomic bombs – yet these four triangles of material (totalling only 30cm²!) took the world by storm, despite initial resistance.

But with so much skin on show, it became necessary for women to remove hair from that area of skin which was hidden up to then: the bikini line. This was something women now had to grapple with!

Fortunately, grooming the bikini line is not tough at all, thanks to new methods in waxing and new depilation creams. We take a look at these methods of bikini line hair removal.

Wax

Waxing the hair is the best option, because it pulls out hair from the root. This means that the hair takes longer to grow back (up to four weeks). The hair also grows back thinner and softer than before, so that’s an advantage. When it comes to waxing your bikini line, there are two courses of action to adopt. One, you can use bikini wax strips if you want a quick clean up. The strips are sized and shaped perfectly to fit the skin on the bikini line. Just warm the strip by rubbing between your hands for a few seconds. Apply the strip firmly to the area and pull off in one motion, against the direction of hair growth. The great thing is that you can cut the strip further to get the perfect size of strip. If you want to wax the area entirely, opt for the Easy Wax roll on system. It warms up the wax and you can apply as much wax as you need using its applicator. The device has a specific bikini head so that you get the perfect finish. Just apply the wax, use the fabric strip provided and pull off the hair for a smooth finish.

Creams

Many women prefer using depilating creams to waxing – they work quickly and are quite convenient, getting to work on the hair in about three minutes. The alkaline chemicals in them break down the hair and dissolve it just below the surface of the skin. The hair can then be wiped or rinsed off, leaving you with super smooth skin that is hair free for longer than with shaving. There are different creams for different skin types, and they also comes in such forms as tubes, like the classic Veet hair removal cream, or with a domed applicator, such as the Bodycurv, which is designed for the bikini line. Just apply the cream to the bikini line, and let it work for the prescribed time. Now scrape off a small amount of the cream to see if it has worked. If the hair doesn’t come off at once, reapply the cream on the bit you just scraped off and wait. The hair then comes away easily and you can reapply the cream to any straggly hairs left behind. Or just pluck the extras and you are done.

Shaving

Some women actually shave the area, especially if they are rushed for time. But this should never be the first thing you try, since it can lead to ingrown hair and a prickly stubble. Plus, the stubble in this area is also quite itchy.

Any hair removal method you eventually adopt is a matter of trial and error, and of course, practice. Whichever method you select and whichever product you choose, we recommend that you first test the product on a small patch of your skin. If there is no adverse reaction for 24 hours after use, you may proceed to use the product without worry. And once you remove the hair from your bikini line, do ensure that you do not use hot water, scented soaps, perfumes or even moisturisers on the area for 24 hours. Also keep away from tight underwear, or such fabrics as Lycra and silk, as these can irritate the skin. You will get the best result if you exfoliate the area 24 hours before removing the hair, and washing the area with warm water to open up the pores before you begin. It makes the hair removal go much better and your skin will be smooth and glowing when you’re done.
