What is the Difference between Hot and Cold Wax?

There are two types of waxing methods: hot wax and cold wax. Their names are fairly self-explanatory, and both methods employ the same substances but two different techniques.

Hot Wax

Salons use this method. The wax is warmed so that it can be applied comfortably on the skin. The hot wax contracts and grips the hairs. The wax solidifies on contact with the skin and is pulled off in one direction, using a strip of cloth or a pliable paper. Once pulled, it takes the hairs with it.

Cold Wax

Cold wax works much like hot wax, only it comes pre-applied on wax strips that are ready to use. Cold wax strips are ideal for home use, and they don’t require to be heated. Just rubbing them for a few seconds between the hands to loosen them up does the trick. The strip is then applied to the hair and pulled, removing the hairs with it.

Hot Wax

Cold Wax

The heat can make the process comfortable, and dilates the pores so the hairs can be removed with less resistance.

Can be used anywhere, right when you need them – no need for a plug or a microwave.

You can decide on the size of the area you want to wax, shaping it for different zones.

The whole process is a lot quicker.

Hot wax can now be used easily at home, with no need to go to the beauty salon.

This method is very efficient, with very little waste.

Hot Wax

Cold Wax

Requires practice and building of a technique in order to use it properly.

If the strips aren’t used correctly, then red bumps and ingrown hairs could occur.

If using a microwave to heat the wax, it can take some time and practice to get the temperature right.

Not suitable for very short hairs.

Salon hot wax treatments treatments can be very expensive.

May have to use a lot of strips for large areas.

Based on the information above, it is quite obvious that there are a lot of things to consider when picking the right method of waxing for you. Veet has both types of solutions, whether you choose hot wax or cold wax.

Traditionally, hot wax treatments were more suited to salons, since specialised equipment is needed to warm up the wax – it can be risky to heat the wax over an ordinary stove. Hence, Veet developed the EasyWax Electrical Roll-On System to eliminate these difficulties. The System heats up the wax safely and to the desired temperature, so all you need to do is insert the wax cartridge and plug it in. After about 20 minutes, the wax is melted and can be rolled on to the skin. Now you can use the fabric strips provided with the box, apply them firmly on the wax and pull away in one smooth motion. Thus, the hair is removed safely and with a perfect finish.

So whatever your preference – hot wax or cold – there is always a Veet product you can choose to make waxing a less painful process.
